The town population at the 2010 census was 15,602 with a population density of 379.4 people per square mile. The median income for a household was $62,405, and the median income for a family was $77,813. What that means for you is that the town is a good mix of white collar business professionals alongside the blue collar residents that gave the town it’s roots as a farming community!
Connecticut Magazine publishes an annual report called “Rating the Towns” which compares how all of the different towns and cities stack up against each other. For the latest version which was released in November 2015, the towns and cities were categorized according to median home values. Ellington CT falls into the $200,000 – $250,000 category with a median home value of $234,400. Residents of Ellington Connecticut, enjoy this classic small New England town with a mix of neighborhoods built as the baby boomer generation moved into town, alongside more recent luxury developments in the south side of town and in the Crystal Lake area. Ellington has some awesome parks with natural beauty and they offer something for everyone. The main park is Brookside park and is located just 2 miles from the center of town. This park has baseball, softball, soccer & football fields, tennis courts, playground for kids, a volleyball court and a covered pavilion. The annual town fair called “the Fireman’s Fair” is held on these grounds during fair season in CT which is late summer into early autumn. The town also has a town beach located on Crystal lake called Sandy Beach. Be sure to check out this beach for swimming, sunbathing and family fun on those hot summer days. Lastly, be sure to visit Arbor Park in the center of town, which features walking paths and a Farmers market is held there on Saturday mornings!
Perhaps one of the most appealing features of living in Ellington CT is the absence of any major business districts or large shopping centers to congest and detract from the natural beauty of the town. As the town has grown, a Big Y Supermarket was developed to provide the growing population with the modern day conveniences of a large grocery store. Previously, just a smaller local market was available and residents had to travel to neighboring towns to grocery shop. One local business in particular has grown into a popular destination called Kloter Farms, which builds and sells custom sheds, garages, gazebos, playscapes as well as handcrafted furniture.
Dining options in Ellington can be limited and a lot of town residents will travel to neighboring towns for popular dining destinations. However, there are some really great local mom and pop options to choose from. Including the center of town staple the Chuck Wagon diner, which any true Ellington resident will be proud of. Other great choices are Casey’s Cafe, which has an outdoor patio and Trattoria da Lepri which is a fabulous upscale Italian restaurant.
