The town population at the 2010 census was 63,268 with a population density of 2,878 people per square mile. The median income for a household was $80,594. What that means for you is that the town is a good mix of white collar business professionals alongside the blue collar residents which makes for a vibrant community.
Connecticut Magazine publishes an annual report called “Rating the Towns” which compares how all of the different towns and cities stack up against each other. For the latest version which was released in November 2015, the towns and cities were categorized according to median home values. West Hartford CT falls into the $250,000 – $325,000 category with a median home value of $291,400. West Hartford actually came in #1 in the “Culture/Leisure” category and I couldn’t agree more! Residents of West Hartford Connecticut, enjoy this classic New England town with a mix of neighborhoods where the motto is “Where City Style meets Village Charm”. West Hartford’s neighborhoods are rich with history. Some were built as the town developed during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, with early Hartford area business men building their stately homes. Others were built after the World Wars ended to house the returning veterans who wanted to raise families. If you are looking for classic center hall colonials and tudors with high end architectural details, this is the area for you. Recently, older commercial buildings have been redeveloped and converted into luxury condominiums. Most of the town has already been developed and most new housing is redevelopments of existing structures and homes.
Perhaps the prize possession of people living and moving to West Hartford, is the downtown area called “West Hartford Center”. Which is an popular destination for the area and has been since the late 17th century! Recently, West Hartford Center had a major shopping and residential development that is adjacent to it called Blue Back Square. Which has brought in large national upscale shopping and dining brands to compliment the mostly local mom and pop dining and shopping options of the center. West Hartford Center made my list of 35 Reasons to Move to Connecticut.
There is not a huge amount of open space in West Hartford. However, what has been preserved and developed into a town park has an amazing amount of natural beauty and they offer something for everyone. A popular park is the West Hartford Reservoir, which is known to locals for it’s paved cycling trails as well as the more rugged Metacomet Trail for mountain bikers, hikers and runners.
Those who choose to move into West Hartford do so for the lifestyle that it offers. It is a major destination for the Greater Hartford area and living in town offers the benefit of being a part of such an exciting town. If you are fortunate to live within walking or biking distance to the center, you will most definitely pay a premium for that luxury. However, being able to take advantage of a nice day and grab an ice cream, bite to eat or a full on shopping spree in the center is without question something unique about West Hartford not offered in any other town in the area and well worth the premium.
When it comes to shopping West Hartford has 7 distinct shopping districts where local, regional and national stores have setup shop. You will find some of the most exquisite shopping in Greater Hartford here as well as some great bargains. Be sure to explore each of the seven districts below.
The Center and Blueback Square – This is the major attraction of West Hartford where over 200 restaurants, shoppes, boutiques, healthcare facilities and business offices call home. I’ve talked about this hot spot a couple times already. Stop reading about it and get over there and check it out!
Westfarms Mall – Located on the border of West Hartford and Farmington (hence the name “Westfarms”) this is an premier indoor shopping mall and features large upscale national retailers such as Nordstroms, the Apple Store, Tiffany’s and Louis Vuitton among others.
Bishops Corner – Taking up all for corners on the northern end of West Hartford, this location is where you will find the neighborhood Whole Foods as well as other large big box stores. Mostly formed by strip malls the location is under heavy redevelopment to further enhance this district for current and future business’s and patrons.
Corbins Corner – This shopping area is located across from WestFarms mall and features the sought after Trader Joes, Best Buy, Old Navy, Toys R Us and the guilty pleasure restaurant Olive Garden. Not a destination to go and hang out but get in and get out with your business.
Elmwood Center – Once considered the less popular southern area of West Harford this section has taken on a renaissance with heavy redevelopment including luxury condos and the famous Pepe’s Pizza. This is a less pretentious area of West Harford and for those looking for a bit less hustle and bustle, should check out the shoppes here.
Home Design District – Perhaps my favorite area of West Hartford is the home design district over on New Park Avenue. Which is a cluster of home improvement, home décor, and construction related businesses. Looking for design ideas based on the latest trends and vendors to help you with those projects? Take a trip there and you will score big time!
Park Road District – Bordering Hartford this area is rich with culture and staples of the community. Grab some ice cream at AC Petersens Farms or go shopping at the neighborhood Hall’s market and catering. Be sure to catch a play or musical at Playhouse on Park. There is even an annual Park Road Parade the first weekend in October!
There is an abundance of dining options in West Hartford. If you want good food, you will find it here and the amount of options can be overwhelming. From simple pizza joints such as Angelina’s Pizza on Prospect Avenue, which offers HUGE slices or HUGE whole pies, to upscale dining such as Grants or Max Oyster Bar on Farmington Avenue in the center. This is the town to come for good food. One of my personal favorites is Tapas Restaurant on New Britain Avenue, which features Greek dishes and offers daily specials on the “blackboard”. This restaurant is tiny, some would say “cozy” and you will no doubt be close by to your neighboring diners but that is part of what makes it cool, it just works there.

People with young children often times will target specific elementary school districts for purchasing a home.
